Florida Storm Season is Here:
Time to Check Your Surge Protection

Why a Battery Backup?

If you've stepped outside around 4 o'clock lately, you already know exactly what I'm talking about. That familiar rumble rolls in, the sky turns that deep gray-green, and before long we've got a full-blown light show right over our neighborhood. Welcome to Florida’s rainy season, — and welcome back to the reason we've earned the nickname "Lightning Capital of the World."

I love this time of year. The afternoon storms cool things down, the yard gets watered for free, and there's something almost comforting about a good Florida thunderstorm... as long as you're not the one whose computer, TV, or router takes a hit from it.

That's what I want to talk to you about today.

A Flash, a Bang, and Then What?

Every summer, I hear the same story from clients: a storm rolls through, the power flickers for half a second, and suddenly a computer won't boot, a modem is fried, or a monitor just goes dark for good. It happens fast, it happens quietly, and it's almost always preventable.

You need to know — a power strip is not the same as surge protection, and surge protection alone isn't the same as a battery backup. Lightning-related power surges can travel through your electrical lines even if the storm never gets directly overhead, and all it takes is one spike to damage sensitive components that took you years to build your setup around — your PC, your files, your photos, your business records.

The good news? This is one of the easiest problems to solve.

What's New and Reliable Right Now

These are the best in the business, and there are two that I stand behind and recommend without hesitation:

For most home setups — the APC Back-UPS 650VA 7-Outlet Battery Backup & Surge Protector. This is the sweet spot for a typical desktop computer, monitor, and a few small accessories like a modem or router. It's compact, affordable, and it gives you real surge protection plus enough battery runtime to safely save your work and shut down properly if the power goes out.

For more demanding setups — the APC Back-UPS Pro 1500VA 10-Outlet UPS with 2 USB Charging Ports. This one steps things up considerably — more outlets, a lot more battery capacity, and a handy display that tells you exactly how much runtime you have left. If you're running a home office, multiple monitors, networking equipment, or anything you really can't afford to lose power on mid-task, this is the one I'd point you toward. Those USB charging ports are also a nice bonus when the power's out for a while and you just need to keep your phone alive.

Why This Matters

These units have a dual purpose. First and foremost, they protect your equipment from surge damage — which, around here, is worth its weight in gold. But they also give you a real buffer during those brief outages we get so often in summer. Instead of losing unsaved work or having your computer shut off mid-task, you get a few extra minutes of runtime to save everything and power down the right way. And during longer outages, they can even keep your essentials — phones, small devices, a router for internet access — running a little while longer.

Think of it as cheap insurance for expensive equipment.

A Small Investment, A Lot of Peace of Mind

I know it's easy to put things like this off — nothing's gone wrong yet, so why worry? But believe me, the clients who reach out to me after a storm has already taken out their equipment always wish they'd made this call beforehand. It's a small, investment that can save you the cost, hassle, and heartache of replacing a computer or losing important files.

If you're not sure which unit is right for your setup, or you'd like help picking one out and getting it installed, give me a call, text, or eMail. I'm always happy to walk through your specific setup with you and make sure you're properly protected before the next storm rolls through.

Stay dry out there, and let's keep your tech safe this season.
